Slide Puzzle
Also known as 15 puzzle
Slide the numbered tiles through the single gap until they read in order.
What is Slide Puzzle?
The slide puzzle, known in its most familiar size as the 15 puzzle, is a frame of numbered tiles with one square missing. Only a tile beside the gap can move, and it can only move into the gap.
Calquest scores a solve by how close your move count comes to the shortest possible one.
How to play Slide Puzzle
The aim: Slide the numbered tiles back into order.
- Tap a tile beside the gap. Any tile sharing an edge with the empty square slides into it. Nothing else can move.
- Finish a row, then leave it alone. Complete the top row and the left column first. Everything after that happens in the smaller square left over.
- The last two are a rotation. When two tiles are in the right row but the wrong order, cycle them around the gap rather than pulling them apart.
How scoring works
- Finishing pays a bonus scaled by difficulty.
- The payout scales with how close your move count is to the shortest possible solve.
- A solve reported as shorter than mathematically possible scores nothing.
How a round ends
The round ends when the tiles read 1 upwards with the gap last.
Skills it draws on
- Sequencing
- Spatial reasoning
- Solving in stages
