Rush Hour
Slide the cars and trucks out of the way and drive the red car off the board.
What is Rush Hour?
Rush Hour is a sliding-block puzzle set in a traffic jam. Every vehicle moves only along its own lane, forwards or backwards, and the red car has to reach the exit on the right-hand edge.
Each Calquest board is scored against the fewest moves it can be solved in, so getting out is one thing and getting out cleanly is another.
How to play Rush Hour
The aim: Drive the red car off the right-hand edge.
- Cars only go straight. A car across the board slides left and right. A car down the board slides up and down. Nothing turns, and nothing jumps another car.
- Drag a car along its lane. Drag any car the way it points. It stops the moment something is in front of it.
- Work backwards from the exit. Find the car blocking the red one, then whatever is blocking that. Clearing the last blocker first is what makes a board fall apart quickly.
How scoring works
- Getting the red car out pays a completion bonus scaled by difficulty.
- Solving in the fewest possible moves pays a large bonus on top.
- Taking longer than the shortest solve scales the payout down rather than cancelling it.
How a round ends
The round ends when the red car reaches the right edge, or when you give up.
Skills it draws on
- Working backwards from a goal
- Sequencing
- Spatial reasoning
