Lights Out
Press a light to flip it and its neighbours, and turn the whole board dark.
What is Lights Out?
Lights Out is played on a grid of lights. Pressing one flips it and the four lights touching it: on becomes off, off becomes on. The goal is a completely dark board.
Pressing the same light twice undoes itself, so only which lights you press matters, never the order. Calquest sets a par for every board and pays more for solving at or under it.
How to play Lights Out
The aim: Turn every light off.
- Tapping flips five cells. The light you tap flips, and so do the ones directly above, below, left and right of it.
- Order does not matter. Tapping the same cell twice undoes itself, so only which cells you press counts, not when.
- Work top down. Clear the top row by pressing the row beneath it, then repeat. Whatever survives to the bottom row is the puzzle.
How scoring works
- Clearing the board pays a completion bonus scaled by difficulty.
- Solving in par moves or fewer pays a large efficiency bonus.
- Going over par scales the payout down rather than cancelling it.
How a round ends
The round ends when the board is dark, or when you give up.
Skills it draws on
- Parity reasoning
- Pattern recognition
- Planning
