Nonogram
Also known as Picross, griddlers
Use the number clues on each row and column to work out which squares are filled.
What is Nonogram?
A nonogram is a logic puzzle on a grid. The numbers beside each row and above each column give the lengths of the runs of filled squares in that line, in order. Nothing has to be guessed: every square can be deduced from the clues.
The same puzzle goes by Picross, griddlers and paint by numbers. Calquest pays for each line that matches its clue, so a partly solved grid still scores.
How to play Nonogram
The aim: Fill the squares that each line's numbers describe.
- Read a clue. 3 1 means a run of three filled squares, at least one gap, then a single filled square — in that order, somewhere in the line.
- Mark what cannot be filled. Tap a square twice to cross it out. Crosses carry no penalty and are how the deductions actually get made.
- Overlap the extremes. Push a run as far left as it goes, then as far right. Anything covered both times is filled for certain.
How scoring works
- Each row or column that matches its clue pays, so a partly solved grid still scores.
- Completing every line pays a large bonus.
- Crossing squares out is free.
How a round ends
The round ends when every line matches its clue, or when you give up.
Skills it draws on
- Deduction
- Working inside constraints
- Certainty over guessing
